An elderly woman residing in a nursing home in upstate New York has been reunited with her stolen wedding ring, thanks to the persistent efforts of a police detective who spent months tracking down the thief. The victim, who suffers from dementia and is unable to care for herself, lives at a healthcare facility in LeRoy, a small town situated between Rochester and Buffalo.
The Theft and Investigation
When the woman's family noticed that her wedding ring was missing from her finger, they reported the incident to the LeRoy Police Department. Detective Kaden Vangalio was assigned to the case and immediately began his investigation. According to the department, Vangalio spent months conducting interviews and searching various databases but initially failed to generate any actionable leads.
Determined to solve the case, Vangalio decided to take a more hands-on approach. He personally traveled to Buffalo, which is roughly an hour's drive from LeRoy, to inspect multiple pawn shops. His persistence paid off when he discovered the stolen ring at one of the establishments. He also obtained the bill of sale, which was allegedly signed by Erica Champagne Clark, a 39-year-old resident of Buffalo.
The Alleged Thief and Charges
LeRoy police allege that Clark was employed at the nursing home and took advantage of the woman's cognitive decline to steal the ring directly from her finger. The ring was then sold to a pawn shop. Police stated that Clark was evasive and avoided contact with investigators for months before eventually turning herself in. She now faces two felony charges: third-degree grand larceny and endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person in the first degree.
Return of the Ring
Detective Vangalio was able to personally return the ring to the woman and her family, bringing closure to a distressing chapter. The LeRoy Police Department expressed their pride in the detective's work, stating in a social media post, "Stealing from one of the most vulnerable members of our community is as low as it gets. You cannot put a price on the sentimental value of a wedding ring. We are proud to help bring closure to this family and grateful for the excellent work of Detective Vangalio in making that happen."
The case highlights the importance of diligent police work and the protection of vulnerable individuals, especially those in care facilities who may be unable to advocate for themselves.
