A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a court bailiff who was allegedly attacked while carrying out his professional duties in County Durham. Jeff Blair, a 55-year-old father and former police officer, was found seriously injured on a street in Shildon following an alleged assault at approximately 1pm on Tuesday.
Tragic Loss of a Public Servant
Mr Blair, who dedicated 22 years to Durham Constabulary as a response PC across the south of the county before retiring in 2017, was rushed to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Despite urgent medical intervention, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. At the time of his death, he was employed as a court bailiff, a legal official authorised to enforce court orders such as unpaid debts or warrants.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Robert Davies, aged 49 and residing on the street in Shildon where the attack occurred, has appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court. He faces charges of murder, possession of an offensive weapon, and affray. Wearing a grey t-shirt during the hearing, Davies spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address. Judge Helen Cousins remanded him into custody, with his next appearance scheduled for Monday at Teesside Crown Court.
The family of Jeff Blair has issued a heartfelt tribute, describing him as a 'much-loved son, brother, father, partner, uncle, and good friend to many'. They highlighted his unique ability to apply humour and laughter to any situation, stating that this quality will be irreplaceable to their family.
