Former Police Officer Turned Bailiff Murdered in County Durham
A 49-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a court bailiff who was fatally assaulted while on duty in County Durham. Robert Davies faces charges of murder, possession of an offensive weapon, and affray in connection with the incident that resulted in the death of 55-year-old Jeff Blair, a former police officer.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Durham Constabulary reported that officers were called shortly after 1pm on Tuesday to Dent Street in Shildon, County Durham, following reports of a man being assaulted. Jeff Blair sustained serious injuries during the attack and was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he later died.
Mr. Blair had served as a police officer with Durham Constabulary for 22 years before retiring in 2017. He subsequently took up a role as a court bailiff, a position that involved visiting properties to serve court documents or handle outstanding debts such as council tax bills and fines.
Police Investigation and Community Response
Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Alderson, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as "deeply upsetting" and expressed shock within the local community. "Our thoughts are with Jeff’s family and all those who knew and loved him at this difficult time," she stated.
The police have maintained a presence at the scene, with Dent Street remaining cordoned off on Thursday afternoon. Authorities have appealed to the public for information, urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant details to come forward.
Tributes and Condolences
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Blair's family remembered him as a "much-loved son, brother, father, partner, uncle, and good friend to many." They highlighted his sense of humour and ability to lighten any situation, expressing devastation over his loss in such tragic circumstances.
A colleague from a court in the north east of England, who wished to remain anonymous, praised Mr. Blair as a "lovely guy and an absolute gentleman" who was known for his polite and peacemaking demeanor rather than aggression.
Official Statements and Review
An HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesperson condemned the violence, stating, "This was a shocking and horrendous incident. Violence against our hardworking staff is completely unacceptable." The service is providing support to affected colleagues and will review the incident to determine if further measures are needed to protect bailiffs in their work.
Robert Davies has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Peterlee Magistrates' Court on Friday. The investigation continues as police work to establish the full circumstances of the attack.
