Father of three in coma after alleged assault in WA

An Australian father of three remains in an induced coma with life-threatening injuries almost two weeks after an alleged assault. Brodie Stokes, 43, suffered critical head injuries during an alleged altercation in Deepdale, near Geraldton in Western Australia's Mid West, on May 15.

Critical condition and surgery

He was rushed 'under lights and sirens' to a local hospital before being airlifted to Perth for treatment of a brain bleed and fractured skull. Mr Stokes has undergone surgery to remove part of his skull to help relieve the pressure on his brain, his sister-in-law has said. He remains in the ICU at Royal Perth Hospital, 420km from home.

Alleged incident and charges

Locals allege the incident was sparked by a car hooning up and down Mr Stokes' street. A 22-year-old Utakarra man has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody and will appear in court on June 18.

Family and community support

Family and friends have rallied around Mr Stokes' wife Bonnie and their three young children as they await updates from doctors. 'Brodie suffered a devastating brain injury due to an (allegedly) selfish, senseless act,' his sister-in-law wrote on a GoFundMe page. 'This has been an unimaginable and heartbreaking time for our family. While we continue to stay by his side and pray for healing, the medical expenses, ongoing treatments, rehabilitation and time away from work are becoming overwhelming.'

Mr Stokes was described as a loving husband, father, son and friend who 'means so much to everyone around him'. 'He has always been the kind of person to help others without hesitation, and now he needs our help more than ever,' the relative said. 'Every donation, prayer and share means the world to our family and gives us strength and hope during this critical time.' Almost $30,000 has been raised in five days to help cover medical bills, hospital stays, rehabilitation and daily expenses.
