Rescue teams in Laos have discovered five villagers alive after they were trapped for over a week in a flooded cave, but two others remain unaccounted for. The group entered the cave in Xaisomboun province, central Laos, on May 19, but heavy rain triggered flash flooding that blocked the exit, trapping seven individuals, according to Lao and Thai rescue teams involved in the operation.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Bounkham Luanglath of the Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People, which has been working closely with local authorities, confirmed that five people were found safe and alive, but the search continues for the two missing individuals. "I'm still shaking. Our team made it happen," he said in a voice message.
The rescue operation involved coordinated efforts from multiple agencies, including local authorities and volunteer groups. The challenging conditions inside the cave, exacerbated by rising water levels, made the rescue particularly difficult.
Ongoing Search
Authorities have not released the names or conditions of those rescued, but they have stated that the search for the missing two will persist. The incident highlights the dangers of flash flooding in the region, which is prone to sudden heavy rains during the monsoon season.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
