Footballer fighting for life after car hits group in Arnold

A footballer is fighting for his life after he and the club manager were injured when a car ploughed into a group of people in a town centre. Emergency services were called to Market Place in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, at just after 1pm on Saturday following reports that a red Vauxhall Astra had collided with a group of people.

Club Statement and Injuries

Woodthorpe Park Rangers FC issued a statement on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that three members of the team, including the manager, were struck by a car in Arnold town centre. The club said the incident has left one of their players fighting for his life in hospital. The club competes in the Nottinghamshire Senior League and had been celebrating their end-of-season awards before the crash.

Nottinghamshire Police reported that the incident followed an altercation in the town centre a short time earlier. A group of people were struck by the vehicle, with one man sustaining life-threatening injuries and four other men suffering less serious injuries. The car was abandoned at the scene, and the driver fled on foot. A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police confirmed on Saturday evening.

Police Investigation and Appeal

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, leading the investigation, said: “We have shared this important update with the family of the seriously injured man, and they are being supported by specialist officers. We would ask that people do not speculate about the circumstances around the incident and respect the privacy of those involved. Our investigation remains ongoing, and we are keeping an open mind while these extensive inquiries continue.”

She added: “We’d like to thank those members of the public who have shared information with us but still want to hear from anyone else who can assist. Anyone who has relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell, or mobile phone footage should also get in touch and share it with the investigation team. All road closures in the area have now been lifted, and we’d like to thank local people for their understanding.”

This is a breaking news story, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
