Construction is scheduled to commence on George Floyd Square in Minneapolis on 8 June, six years after George Floyd's murder. George Floyd, a Black man, was killed in May 2020 by police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for over nine minutes. The intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue became a significant memorial and community gathering place following his death.
Revamp Details
The city's revamp aims to implement street and infrastructure improvements, supporting remembrance, gathering, and safety, with completion expected next year. The updated design will reopen the intersection to traffic while maintaining a dedicated memorial area, featuring flexible gathering spaces, art, green spaces, and bikeways.
Community Impact
This project seeks to balance the need for a permanent memorial with the practical requirements of the neighborhood. The square has served as a focal point for protests and remembrance since Floyd's death, and the new design aims to preserve its significance while enhancing accessibility.
