Two Jewish men have been stabbed in north London in what Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called a “deeply concerning” attack. The incident occurred on Golders Green Road, where a man was seen running while armed with a knife and “attempting to stab Jewish members of the public,” according to the Jewish security group Shomrim.
Arrest and Response
The suspect was detained by members of Shomrim before police officers tasered and arrested him. Shomrim reported that two people were stabbed and are being treated by Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer ambulance service. The scene is approximately half a mile from a memorial wall where an attempted arson attack took place on Monday, and near where four Jewish community ambulances were destroyed by fire in late March.
Political Reactions
Speaking in the Commons, Sir Keir Starmer said, “It is deeply concerning to everyone in this House. There is now a police investigation and I think we all need to do everything we can to support that investigation and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the like of which we have seen too much recently.”
Sarah Sackman, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, stated, “Attacks on British Jews are an attack on Britain itself.” Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan condemned the “appalling attack” and urged anyone with information to contact police, noting that the Met will step up patrols following the stabbings.
Hornsey and Friern Barnet MP Catherine West expressed deep concern, saying, “The whole House will be very concerned to hear about the dreadful stabbings this morning in the borough of Barnet.” She added, “We condemn these alleged attacks and we wish the police, the council and all the community services the very best in solving this and bringing to justice those perpetrators of these violent crimes.”
Community and Security Responses
The Community Security Trust (CST) thanked Shomrim, Hatzola, and the Metropolitan Police for their swift response, urging anyone with information to contact authorities. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said they are liaising with the CST, Government, and police to ensure a forceful response.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp described the stabbings as “yet another appalling antisemitic attack,” adding that “the Jewish community are not being properly protected from this hate.” He called on the Government to urgently step up actions against antisemitism, Iran, and Islamist extremism.
These attacks are among a number of alleged incidents targeting Jewish sites in London in recent weeks, raising concerns about rising antisemitism in the capital.
