Moshe Shine, 76, has been identified as one of two Jewish men stabbed in a terror attack in Golders Green, north London. Friends have described him as “the nicest guy” who “wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
Attack Details
Mr. Shine was reportedly waiting at a bus stop to go home when he was attacked. Disturbing footage appears to show a man putting on a kippah before being lunged at by the assailant. A second victim, aged 34, was also injured. Both were rushed to hospital.
Police Response
The Metropolitan Police released footage showing officers confronting the suspect, shouting “get down on the ground” before using a Taser and grappling with him to retrieve a knife. A member of the public also helped apprehend the suspect. Britain’s most senior police officer, Sir Mark Rowley, stated the 45-year-old suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health problems.
Community Reaction
Jewish leaders have called for tougher action on antisemitic violence. A friend of Mr. Shine told The Sun he is “very softly spoken. Very generous. He’s a very nice, smiley guy. Really the nicest guy. He never lost his temper or raised his voice.” The friend added that Mr. Shine’s nephew said he is in a serious condition with a neck wound.
Norman, another friend, said Mr. Shine worships at the Hendon Adath Synagogue and described being “devastated” by the attack. The younger victim, Shloime Rand, is well known in the community. Eli V, a friend, said: “I knew one of the victims through the community. It is shocking to be honest. He’s a terrific guy. We are a very close community. Everyone knows everyone. My wife is scared to leave home.”
