Hersheypark in Pennsylvania faces a potential closure this summer due to a heated dispute between park operators and union employees, according to reports. The amusement park, scheduled to open seven days a week from May 21, is now at risk as workers vote on whether to strike.
Union Rejects Contract Offer
Over 200 union maintenance employees at Hersheypark, The Hotel Hershey, and Giant Center voted against a contract proposal from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts on May 7. The operators described this proposal as their 'last, best and final' offer, as reported by Inside the Magic. This marks the third rejected offer, prompting a three-day strike vote this week.
Workers Involved
The employees considering strike action include ride mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders, painters, machinists, utilities technicians, carpenters, garage auto mechanics, and sign artists. Their demands focus on fair wage increases, more affordable healthcare plans, and higher pay premiums for less desirable shifts. The union also insists on maintaining professional standards and preventing future wage reductions for skilled trades.
Negotiation History
In mid-March, the union and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts agreed to a 60-day contract extension to allow continued negotiations. However, the latest rejection has escalated tensions. The Independent has reached out to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts for comment.
