Several individuals are currently being held hostage at a bank branch in the small German town of Sinzig, located in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate. German police have confirmed that multiple suspects and hostages, including a cash transport driver, are inside the savings bank branch, approximately 26 kilometres from the city of Bonn.

The incident was reported in the town centre at around 0700 GMT on Friday. Police stated that "it is currently believed that there are several perpetrators and hostages inside the bank." A police spokesperson described the situation as currently "stable." Authorities have launched extensive operations and cordoned off a large area, assuring the public that there is no danger outside the cordoned-off zone.
Context of Recent Bank Crimes
This standoff follows a major theft months earlier, where thieves stole tens of millions of euros worth of property from safety deposit boxes in a German bank vault. In that incident, a fire alarm summoned police and firefighters to a bank branch in Gelsenkirchen shortly before 4 am on Monday. They discovered a hole in the wall and a ransacked vault, with police believing a large drill was used to breach the basement wall.
Approximately 2,700 bank customers were affected by the theft at the Sparkasse bank. Police spokesperson Thomas Nowaczyk estimated the theft was worth between €10 and €90 million (£8.7 million to £79 million), potentially one of Germany's largest heists. The bank remained closed on Tuesday, with around 200 people demanding entry. Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in a nearby parking garage over the weekend, and video footage from the garage showed masked individuals inside a stolen vehicle early Monday.
