Jesy Nelson Shares Forest Walk with Twins Amid SMA Campaign
Jesy Nelson Forest Walk with Twins Amid SMA Fight

Jesy Nelson, the 34-year-old singer, enjoyed a serene forest walk with her newborn twins, Ocean and Story, sharing a glimpse of her motherhood journey on Instagram on Friday. The twins, now 10 months old, were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA Type 1) in January, a rare muscle-wasting condition. In the photos, the babies were swaddled in blankets, gazing at the greenery around them. Nelson captioned the post: 'Forest walks with my girlies' alongside a love heart emoji.

Campaign for Newborn Screening

Since receiving the diagnosis, Jesy has been advocating for the NHS to introduce newborn screening for SMA Type 1. She revealed that a late diagnosis means her twins will never be able to walk. Despite the UK National Screening Committee rejecting earlier calls, Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced plans in October 2026 to screen over 400,000 babies for the condition. However, Jesy expressed mixed feelings, noting that only certain areas in England will conduct the tests initially.

She explained: 'It is a bit bittersweet because they are only doing it in certain areas of England. It's essentially a postcode lottery for your baby, which shouldn't be the case. All babies' lives matter. I'm going to keep pushing to get this in all areas of England.' She also highlighted that a petition with 100,000 signatures will be debated in parliament, calling it a 'major milestone.'

Personal Struggles and Hope

Jesy previously described caring for her twins as an emotional rollercoaster, with medical procedures causing distress. Despite a devastating prognosis that the twins may not live beyond age two, she remains hopeful they will defy the odds with treatment. Speaking on Jamie Laing's podcast, she said: 'My girls are the strongest, most resilient babies, and I really believe they are going to defy all the odds.' She continues to document her journey on her Prime Video series, aiming to 'make a change.'

The NHS 'heel prick' test currently screens for 10 conditions, but SMA will be added in the pilot from October 2026. Jesy's relentless campaigning has been praised by the SMA community, though she stresses there is still a long way to go.
