Police Release Body Camera Footage of Justin Timberlake's 2024 Drunken Driving Arrest

Police have officially released body camera footage documenting the 2024 drunken driving arrest of pop star Justin Timberlake in New York's affluent Hamptons region. The video, which spans approximately eight hours, provides a detailed account of the incident that occurred in Sag Harbor, a former whaling village located about 100 miles east of New York City.

Struggles with Sobriety Tests and Nervous Confessions

In the footage, Justin Timberlake is seen visibly struggling to perform standard field sobriety tests after being pulled over by Sag Harbor police officers. The officers suspected him of driving under the influence when he reportedly ran a stop sign in the village center and veered out of his lane. Timberlake, who was driving a BMW, exited the vehicle smelling of alcohol, according to police reports.

During the tests, which required him to walk a straight line heel-to-toe and stand on one leg, Timberlake appeared flustered and apologetic. He told officers, "these are like really hard tests" and expressed his nervousness, stating, "I'm a little nervous" and noting that his heart was racing. At one point, he identified himself to an officer by saying, "World tour. I'm Justin Timberlake," after initially struggling to explain his presence in town.

Legal Proceedings and Release of the Video

The release of the video follows a legal agreement between Sag Harbor village officials and Timberlake's lawyers, who had initially sued to block its disclosure. They argued that making the footage public would "devastate" Timberlake's privacy and cause "severe and irreparable harm" to his reputation by exposing him to public ridicule. However, in a joint filing, they conceded that the video does not constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy under New York state's public information law.

Sag Harbor officials, represented by village lawyer Vincent Toomey, issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the resolution. They emphasized their commitment to complying with the Freedom of Information Law, noting that the material was reviewed and redacted to address public safety, officer safety, and personal privacy concerns. Timberlake's lawyers and representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the day of the release.

Outcome of the Case and Public Safety Measures

Justin Timberlake ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of impaired driving in September 2024. As part of the plea deal, which downgraded the initial misdemeanor to a noncriminal traffic violation, he agreed to produce a public safety announcement warning against the dangers of drunken driving. Additional penalties included a $500 fine, 25 hours of community service, and a 90-day suspension of his driver's license.

In the video, Timberlake is heard questioning his arrest from the back seat of the police car, asking, "Why are you arresting me?" Later, at the police station, when informed he would be held overnight, he remarked, "I'm going to be here all night? You guys are wild, man." He also requested that the light be kept on in his cell as officers locked the door.

The Associated Press and other media outlets had filed records requests for the video, leading to its disclosure. This case highlights ongoing debates about privacy, public records, and celebrity accountability in legal matters.
