A man has died and a woman is in a life-threatening condition following a serious two-vehicle collision on the M4 near Heathrow Airport. The motorway remains closed between junction 3 (Harrow) and junction 4B, causing delays of up to two hours and six miles of congestion.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 23:37 on Monday, 1 June, to reports of a collision between a white VW Golf and a black BMW 320i near junction 4. The occupants of the VW Golf were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service. A 63-year-old man was pronounced dead, a 62-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, and a 29-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Police stated that the BMW had been pursued by Thames Valley Police officers prior to the collision on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, but they were not in pursuit at the time of the crash. The occupant of the BMW fled the scene on foot, and officers are working to locate him.
National Highways said contractors are dealing with spillage and clean-up works, and there is currently no estimated time for reopening the carriageway. Motorists are advised to follow diversion routes via the A312 and A40.
