An explosion and subsequent fire at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine, on Friday resulted in at least 11 injuries, encompassing both firefighters and civilians. The incident unfolded around 11 a.m., triggering a mass casualty response as multiple Mayday calls were transmitted and several fire trucks sustained damage or were completely destroyed.
One patient remains in critical condition, while Maine Medical Center is preparing to receive 10 additional patients who were initially treated at other hospitals. The event has deeply unsettled local residents, who noted that Robbins Lumber serves as a major employer in the area and that many individuals likely know those affected by what is being described as a "terrible catastrophe."
Official Response and Ongoing Situation
Maine Governor Janet Mills was promptly briefed on the situation and has urged the public to avoid the vicinity as emergency personnel continue their response efforts. By late afternoon, the fire had been contained but not completely extinguished, with crews working diligently to prevent any further escalation.
The Maine State Fire Marshal's office is leading the investigation into the cause of the explosion, which has left the community in shock and raised concerns about workplace safety at industrial facilities.
