Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has been convicted of using a handheld mobile phone while driving on the M6 motorway, a court has heard. The 25-year-old Georgian international was pulled over by Cheshire Police after an officer spotted him holding his phone near the steering wheel of his Audi, appearing to watch a video while travelling at motorway speed.
Incident Details
The incident occurred at approximately 3:45 PM on 27 January on the southbound carriageway of the M6 between Junctions 23 and 21. Police Constable Ree, in a written statement, noted that the Audi was travelling in lane two while lane one was clear, which prompted his attention. As he passed the vehicle, he observed the driver holding a mobile phone near the centre of the steering wheel, apparently watching something on the screen.
When it was safe, the officer stopped the vehicle on the hard shoulder and asked Mamardashvili to sit in the rear of the police car. The footballer identified himself using a Georgian driving licence. The entire stop was captured on the officer’s bodyworn video, as presented to the court.
Court Proceedings
Mamardashvili did not respond to the police prosecution notice, and his case was dealt with in a private hearing under the Single Justice Procedure. No plea was entered, and he was found guilty based on the written police evidence. On Friday at Warrington Combined Court, he was sentenced to a £440 fine, received six penalty points on his licence, and was ordered to pay £120 costs and a £176 victim surcharge.
Season Performance
Mamardashvili has made 20 appearances for Liverpool this season, recording three clean sheets while deputising for the injured first-choice goalkeeper Alisson. He signed for the Reds in 2025 and is also a key player for the Georgian national team.
He was among 247 motorists prosecuted across England and Wales last week for using a phone while driving, resulting in fines totalling more than £41,000. Drivers caught using handheld phones are also commonly charged with failing to have proper control of a vehicle.
