Man Arrested After Baby Girl Dies from Dog Bite in Redcar
A 45-year-old man has been arrested after a baby girl died as a result of a dog bite in a tragic incident that has shocked the community. Cleveland Police reported that the three-month-old infant passed away in the Dormanstown area of Redcar on Thursday, prompting an immediate and thorough investigation.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
Police were called to reports of concern for a child at a property on Hardale Grove shortly after 1.30pm on Thursday. Upon arrival, armed officers destroyed one dog on the street, while another dog located at the property was recovered and later destroyed. Both dogs were assessed by a specialist officer and deemed not to be a prohibited breed, according to the force.
The arrested man was detained on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death. He has since been bailed pending further inquiries, as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the baby's death.
Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
In addition to the baby's death, a 31-year-old woman suffered an injury to her arm as a result of the dog bite and received treatment at hospital. Cleveland Police have stated that officers are treating the girl's death as a result of a dog bite, with an investigation ongoing to determine the full details.
Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale expressed condolences, saying, "Our thoughts continue to be with the child's family following this tragic and distressing incident. I want to take this opportunity to request that their privacy is respected during this difficult time." She added that a scene remains in place at the property alongside a visible policing presence, and encouraged anyone with information or footage to come forward.
Emergency Services Involvement
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulance crews, one clinical team leader, and one duty officer to the incident, highlighting the severity of the response. This tragic event has raised concerns about dog safety and control in residential areas, with local authorities urging vigilance and cooperation from the public.
