Man Charged After 9-Year-Old Drives on Highway at Night

A man has been charged in New South Wales, Australia, after police allegedly discovered a nine-year-old boy driving a car on a major highway in the early hours of the morning. The incident, which occurred on the Great Western Highway near Mount Lambie, has raised serious concerns about child safety and reckless driving.

Police Investigation and Charges

According to authorities, a seatbelt detection camera captured the vehicle travelling at approximately 1:35 am local time on 7 March. The footage reportedly showed an "unrestrained child" sitting on the lap of a 45-year-old man from Lightning Ridge. Police stated that the man was experiencing "significant fatigue" and was "operating the pedals" while the minor was steering the car.

Following an investigation, officers visited the man's home on 11 March and issued a court attendance notice. He has been charged with four offences: driving recklessly, negligent driving, driving without proper control of the vehicle, and driving with one passenger seatbelt or restraint not properly fastened.

Court Appearance and Broader Context

The man is scheduled to appear at the Walgett Local Court on 28 April. This case highlights ongoing issues with underage driving in Australia. For instance, last year, a 15-year-old boy was sentenced to over five years in jail after crashing a stolen car in Canberra, resulting in two fatalities. In 2017, police stopped a 12-year-old boy who had attempted to drive across Australia alone, covering about 1,300 kilometres.

These incidents underscore the dangers of allowing children to operate vehicles and the legal consequences for adults who enable such behaviour. The New South Wales police emphasised in a statement that they will allege the man's actions were negligent and posed a significant risk to public safety.
