A tragic incident unfolded on the A1(M) near Stevenage in the early hours of Saturday, May 9, when a man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while exiting his broken-down car. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 1:20 am following reports of a collision.
Details of the Incident
The victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, was reportedly getting out of a silver Honda Civic that had broken down and come to a stop on a grass verge adjacent to the slip road. Shortly after he exited the vehicle, he was hit by a passing car. Paramedics attended the scene and attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers involved in the collision remained at the location and are cooperating with Hertfordshire Police as they conduct their investigation.
Police Appeal for Information
Detective Sergeant Ben Heath, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed his condolences: “Firstly, my thoughts go out to the man’s loved ones at this sad time. We are appealing for witnesses, information and dash cam footage as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.”
He added: “At this stage, we believe the man may have been exiting a broken-down silver Honda Civic that was stationary on the grass verge near to the slip road. If you were travelling in the area at the time and recall seeing the vehicle, or if you have any information that you think may assist with our enquiries, please get in touch.”
Investigators are urging anyone with relevant information to contact Hertfordshire Police via their website or to report anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers. The appeal emphasizes the importance of dash cam footage from motorists who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by roadside breakdowns, particularly on high-speed motorways. Authorities continue to investigate the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
