A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday evening in East Sussex, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old man and hospitalising seven others after a multi-vehicle crash involving a police pursuit. Police Confirm Pursuit and Refer Case to IOPC
Sussex Police have confirmed that the collision occurred shortly after a police pursuit, prompting the force to refer itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for an independent investigation. A spokesperson from Sussex Police identified the deceased as a 23-year-old man from Hailsham, who was declared dead at the scene.
The spokesperson detailed that two passengers from a different vehicle sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital, while five others involved suffered minor injuries requiring medical treatment. They emphasised that the BMW had been involved in the police pursuit immediately prior to the collision.
Investigation Underway with Increased Police Presence
Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme expressed condolences, stating, 'This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of this young man and all those affected.' An investigation is currently underway to fully understand the circumstances, with increased police activity expected in the area as enquiries continue.
Wolstenholme added, 'I would like to thank the public for their patience during the emergency response and for their understanding as our enquiries continue.' Authorities are appealing for information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, and urge anyone with details to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Drummer.
