A young man is fighting for his life in hospital following a shooting on Christmas Day in Sheffield, which has sparked a major police investigation and widespread shock in the local community.
Critical Incident on Wilfred Drive
South Yorkshire Police were called to Wilfred Drive in the Darnall area at 11.27pm on 25 December after receiving reports that a man had been shot in the chest. Emergency services rushed to the scene and the victim, a 20-year-old man, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical, life-threatening condition.
Swift Police Action and Arrests
Detectives moved quickly to investigate the Christmas Day shooting, leading to the arrest of four local men. A 20-year-old, a 22-year-old, a 28-year-old, and a 29-year-old were all detained on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in police custody. A significant police cordon was put in place, closing Wilfred Drive and a 100-metre section of nearby Wilfrid Road, with patrol cars stationed at the scene throughout Friday.
Community Shock and Police Appeal
Residents of the normally quiet Darnall neighbourhood expressed their dismay at the violent incident. One local man described the area as a "safe place" and voiced his confusion over the events, stating, "Nobody deserves this to happen to them." Prayers were said for the victim at a mosque opposite the scene during Friday lunchtime services.
Chief Inspector Andy Knowles of South Yorkshire Police condemned the attack, stating: "This is an abhorrent incident that has left a man fighting for his life. Gun crime poses a great threat to the safety and wellbeing of our community... It will not be tolerated under any circumstances."
He emphasised the force's commitment to taking firm, decisive action against anyone involved in violence or illegal firearms, but stressed that police work is strengthened by community support. Officers are continuing to appeal for information and any footage that could assist the inquiry, and will maintain a presence in the area to address residents' concerns.
