Police and prosecutors near Boston have confirmed they are yet to make an arrest following the fatal shooting of a distinguished Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor at his home.
Details of the Fatal Shooting
Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old professor and director, died in a local hospital on Tuesday morning. The shooting occurred at his residence in Brookline on Monday night, according to a statement released by the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
The office described the case as an active and ongoing homicide investigation, providing only limited information at this stage. Brookline police have deferred all questions to the prosecutors.
A Prominent Academic Career Cut Short
Professor Loureiro was a leading figure in his field. MIT confirmed he served as the director of the university's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He also held a dual professorship in the departments of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Physics.
His academic journey took him from his studies in Portugal and London to postdoctoral research at the prestigious Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in the United States. Prior to joining the MIT faculty in 2016, he was a researcher at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion at IST Lisbon.

The prestigious university has stated it is offering support services to Professor Loureiro's students, colleagues, and others within the MIT community affected by the tragic loss.
Authorities have emphasised that the investigation is progressing but have not identified any suspect currently in custody. The district attorney's office continues to lead the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the professor's death.
