Sandwell Mother Convicted of Murdering Infant Daughter in Deliberate Act
Zara Arsalan, a 31-year-old mother from West Bromwich, has been found guilty of murdering her two-month-old daughter Harleen in what authorities described as a deliberate act of violence. The verdict was delivered on Friday, February 20, at Coventry Crown Court following a trial that revealed harrowing details about the infant's fatal injuries.
Tragic Discovery and Medical Evidence
Emergency services were called to a property in West Bromwich on July 23, 2020, after reports that baby Harleen was unresponsive. The initial claim suggested the infant had fallen from her mother's lap, but paramedics arriving at the scene found the child with a severe head injury and struggling to breathe.
Harleen was rushed to hospital but tragically died the following day. A post-mortem examination conducted afterwards revealed the extent of her injuries, which included multiple skull fractures, brain haemorrhaging, fractured ribs, and a broken collar bone.
Medical experts testified that these injuries were caused by impact with a hard surface and were inconsistent with a simple fall. They also presented evidence suggesting Harleen had been violently shaken, further contradicting the mother's account of events.
Police Investigation and Court Proceedings
Zara Arsalan was arrested and charged with murder following the medical findings. Throughout the investigation and trial, she maintained her innocence, denying any responsibility for her daughter's death.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole from West Midlands Police's Homicide Unit commented on the case, stating: "This is an incredibly tragic case. Harleen was only two months old when she died at the hands of the person who should have been doing everything to keep her safe."
He added: "Arsalan has never taken responsibility for her actions. Instead, she has repeatedly lied about what happened to Harleen despite being shown evidence that rejects her claims."
Sentencing and Aftermath
The jury's guilty verdict came after careful consideration of all evidence presented during the trial. Arsalan is now awaiting sentencing, which has been scheduled for Thursday, March 12.
Detective Chief Inspector Poole expressed gratitude to the investigating officers, noting: "I want to thank all of the officers involved as I know they were deeply affected by this investigation. They have worked incredibly hard to get justice for Harleen and her family."
The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of child abuse and the importance of thorough medical and police investigations in such tragic circumstances. The community of West Bromwich and beyond has been shaken by the details that emerged during the trial.
