Merseyside Police have introduced a Section 60 Order in Kirkby following the unexplained death of a man in his 30s. The order, effective from 5pm on Saturday, 27 June until 4.59pm on Sunday, 28 June, grants officers additional powers to search individuals suspected of involvement in criminality or disorder.
The investigation began after the North West Ambulance Service reported a man in his 30s found dead at around 12.50pm on Kersey Road. A police cordon remains in place on Kersey Road and parts of Broad Lane. His death is currently being treated as unexplained while enquiries continue.
Witness Accounts and Forensic Work
An eyewitness told the Liverpool ECHO that a friend had discovered the man with facial injuries and without shoes. Another witness living near the cordon reported seeing a man lying on the floor. Police forensic teams are working inside the cordon, and detectives are conducting CCTV and witness enquiries.
The Section 60 Order covers an area bounded by and including the M57, up to the Maghull area, including the industrial estate but not the Field Lane side of the M57. It authorises police to stop and search any pedestrian, male or female of any ethnicity, aged 16 to 45, for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments. Vehicles and their occupants may also be searched, and any dangerous weapons seized.
Police Statement and Public Appeal
Chief Inspector Christopher Bland said: “This order is not designed to disrupt those who live on Kersey Road or people in Kirkby or who are behaving in a lawful manner. It will instead be used to help keep everyone safe from those involved in criminality, and ensure that people who live in the area are protected from any disruption.” He added that officers will maintain public order and take action against those carrying dangerous weapons.
