Melbourne Comic Con Tragedy: Police Investigate 'Extremely Odd' Footpath Crash

Police in Melbourne are investigating what they describe as an 'extremely odd' incident after a driver allegedly swerved his car into fans outside a gaming convention, killing one man and leaving another fighting for his life. The tragic event unfolded just after 5pm on Saturday outside the Supanova Comic Con and Gaming event at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Details of the Fatal Incident

A grey Toyota is understood to have mounted a kerb where three men in their 20s were standing, having just left the convention. The vehicle allegedly struck the trio, with one man dying at the scene and another sustaining significant lower limb injuries, requiring urgent hospitalisation with life-threatening conditions. Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy confirmed the grim details, noting the car travelled across southbound lanes before impacting the pedestrians.

'For unknown reasons the car has travelled across the southbound lanes, up on to the footpath where it has impacted two young males in their 20s, who were walking in a group of three,' Detective Inspector McEvoy stated. 'One of the males has died at the scene, the other has sustained significant lower limb injuries and has been conveyed to hospital.'

'Extremely Odd' Circumstances Under Scrutiny

Authorities highlighted the peculiar nature of the crash, with the vehicle reportedly travelling a significant distance along the footpath. 'It is extremely odd as the vehicle had travelled a significant distance along the footpath,' Detective Inspector McEvoy explained. 'The car then travelled along the footpath approximately another 120 metres where it has come to rest.'

A 33-year-old man from Werribee, allegedly driving the vehicle, was arrested at the scene by an off-duty police officer assisted by members of the public. The driver, who is believed to be well known to police, remains under police guard in hospital as investigations continue into potential factors such as speed, alcohol, or drugs.

Witness Accounts and Immediate Response

Witness Tom, who was leaving the convention with his family, reported hearing a screech before seeing the Toyota mount the kerb at an erratic speed. 'I heard a screech and a guy allegedly mounted the kerb at an erratic speed, hit a couple people,' Tom told media. He described the car performing a U-turn before stalling, prompting him to attempt a citizen's arrest, declaring, 'You're not going anywhere, mate.'

Tom's wife, a paramedic, provided critical aid to one victim for 20 minutes before ambulances arrived, noting the injured man was breathing but unable to move. Victoria Police quickly responded to secure the scene and arrest the driver.

Community Impact and Convention Response

Supanova, a popular convention focused on science fiction, fantasy TV shows, comic books, gaming, and collectables, expressed deep sadness over the incident. In a Facebook statement, organisers shared condolences: 'We here at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming are deeply saddened and distressed by the incident that occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds this evening. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the unspeakable tragedy that has happened on our doorstep.'

The event will continue as planned, with a minute's silence scheduled for 10am to honour the victims and show solidarity with affected families and friends. Police are urging anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers to assist with the ongoing investigation into this devastating and unusual crash.
