Search teams have resumed their operation to find a British teenager who vanished while hiking in Romania. George Smyth, 18, from Newport, Shropshire, was last seen in the Bucegi Mountains in November and remains missing as mountain rescue teams launch a fresh search in Valea Gigănesti.
The University of Bristol student was last believed to have been in that area. The latest operation took place under difficult conditions owing to substantial quantities of snow still covering the region. Mountain rescuers reported that certain sections remained buried beneath snow between two and three metres deep, with some drifts exceeding three metres. Teams continued scanning and excavating in areas they considered relevant, including locations where snow had gathered beneath rocks.
No Conclusive Leads Yet
However, no conclusive leads have emerged, as reported by NeedToKnow. George disappeared while trekking in the central region of Romania last November, according to the Daily Star. At the time, the local mountain rescue service, Salvamont Brasov, stated that searches had been hampered by severe weather and snow accumulating up to three metres deep in places.
A spokesperson expressed optimism that rising temperatures would thaw the snow and allow teams to access areas that remain difficult to examine. In a statement, the rescue service said: "Unfortunately, no other conclusive hints have emerged at this moment." They added that searches would continue in the coming period depending on conditions in the mountains.
Prolonged Winter Complicates Operations
The rescue service disclosed this year's prolonged winter had resulted in snow depths substantially greater than originally expected, rendering operations significantly more difficult. In December, rescuer Sebastian Marinescu stated that George's last known location was in a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area."
By January, George's family members revealed they'd been forced to accept his death. They said: "When the mountains that took him are ready to let go, George will be found, and we will bring him home to say goodbye."
