In a bizarre incident captured on video, police officers discovered a shoplifter attempting to conceal herself inside a large brown bin during a targeted crackdown on retail crime. The footage, released by Hertfordshire Police, shows the moment officers opened the lid of the bin to find a woman crouching within, clutching a carrier bag filled with suspected stolen items.
Operation Hornet Targets Shoplifting Hotspots
This unusual discovery occurred as part of Operation Hornet, an initiative launched during the festive period in 2025 to combat shoplifting in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield town centres. The operation involved deploying plain-clothes officers to four identified retail crime hotspots within these areas.
Video Captures Mocking Exchange
The video shared by police captures the moment officers approached the bin, located in the front garden of a residential property. One officer can be heard saying, "I've got the female. Just out of the bin for me, lovely." As the woman began to extricate herself, causing the bin to tip over, another officer arrived smiling and quipped, "Where you bin?" His colleague responded with, "Rubbish hiding place wasn't in."
After the woman stepped out, police retrieved a large carrier bag from the bin, with one officer remarking, "lovely stuff, perfect." The footage shows both officers laughing at the woman's unconventional and ultimately ineffective hiding spot.
Significant Results from Police Crackdown
Operation Hornet has yielded substantial results according to police statistics. The initiative led to 64 arrests and 158 offences being charged, with the total value of recovered stolen items exceeding £41,000. Additionally, authorities issued 32 Community Resolutions, utilized 29 Anti-Social Behaviour powers, and secured prison sentences for six individuals.
Collaborative Approach with Retailers
Welwyn Hatfield Chief Inspector Pete Frost emphasized the operation's success and its collaborative nature. "We're really pleased with the results of this operation and hope the local business community feel reassured that we are committed to tackling shoplifting," he stated.
"A key feature of Operation Hornet has been the development of strong, collaborative relationships with retailers. Close liaison with store managers and security teams has facilitated not only the positive resolution of incidents but has also enabled a more holistic approach to reducing offending."
Chief Inspector Frost added that this comprehensive strategy included arrests, charges, prison sentences, Community Resolutions, and rehabilitative courses tailored to the level of offending. He expressed gratitude to local businesses for their support throughout the operation.
Additional Footage Shows Broader Success
The police-released video also includes footage of other shoplifters being apprehended during Operation Hornet, with stolen items ranging from alcohol to designer perfumes. These captures demonstrate the operation's broader effectiveness in addressing retail crime across the targeted areas.
This incident highlights both the creative, if ill-advised, attempts by offenders to evade capture and the determined efforts by law enforcement to combat shoplifting through coordinated operations and community partnerships.
