Sleepy Burglar Caught Napping Mid-Burglary on April Fool's Day

In a bizarre twist of events, a dozing burglary suspect was apprehended after apparently nodding off midway through raiding a family home on April Fool's Day. Nottinghamshire Police reported that officers were dispatched to a residence in the market town of Newark following reports of an ongoing burglary in the early hours of April 1.

Early Morning Response

Upon arrival at approximately 3:15 am, the responding officers observed that a window had been smashed. Concerned for the homeowner's safety and suspecting an intruder might still be inside, the team made the decision to enter the property.

An Unexpected Discovery

Instead of confronting an active criminal, the scene that greeted them could easily have been mistaken for an elaborate April Fool's prank. The house was completely empty, save for one man found sleeping on a floor bed adjacent to an infant's cot in one of the rooms.

The ensuing farce was captured on police body-worn camera footage, which has since been released by the force. The video shows an officer grabbing the suspect by the arm while colleagues loudly command, 'Get up!'

The Arrest Unfolds

Dressed in a blue polo shirt and a gold chain, the suspected burglar appeared so dazed as handcuffs were being applied that he struggled to articulate a single word. Police quickly established that the man was not the homeowner, leading to his immediate detention.

The 24-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary. Inspector Dale Smith of Nottinghamshire Police commended the officers, stating, 'The officers responding to this incident did a great job apprehending a suspect as quickly as they did.'

Police Statement and Assurance

Inspector Smith elaborated, 'Having heard a burglary was in progress, the team made their way there and took action when they suspected an intruder could still be inside the house. As it turned out, the property was completely empty, aside from one man who was lying down on a floor bed in one of the rooms.'

He further emphasized the force's commitment, adding, 'As shown by our robust response to this burglary report, we will always treat incidents of this nature seriously and act accordingly.' This unusual case highlights both the unpredictability of criminal activity and the diligent response of law enforcement, even when faced with surreal circumstances.
