A Tennessee high school student has publicly condemned her local school board after a board member made inappropriate comments and gestures toward her during a meeting. The teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed due to her minor status, appeared before the Washington County Board of Education in a livestreamed session last week and delivered a scathing statement, labeling the board members as 'cowards.'
Incident Details
The controversy stems from an incident on April 2, when board member Keith Ervin placed his arm around the student, pulled her close, and said, 'God, you're hot, you know that? Damn. Where do you go to school at?' The comment was met with uncomfortable laughter from those present, and Ervin was later seen placing his hand on the student's back again. The meeting continued without further disruption, but footage of the exchange quickly sparked outrage both locally and online.
Board's Response
In response to public backlash, an emergency board meeting was held on April 8, where some parents demanded Ervin's resignation or removal. However, the board opted not to terminate him, citing that elected officials cannot be dismissed from their positions. Instead, they issued a censure—a formal public condemnation of his actions. The Washington County Board of Education stated that while Ervin's behavior was inappropriate, they were limited in disciplinary options.
Student's Statement
On April 7, the student addressed the board directly, criticizing their handling of the situation. 'Gaining global attention for sexual comments and assault is not the reputation that Washington County deserves,' she said, referencing widespread media coverage. She continued, 'Everyone on this board shares that blame, as does every voter who put you into office. I believe that you are all cowards.'
The teenager described Ervin's actions as 'unwelcome,' 'sexist,' and 'derogatory,' and argued that the board's 'failure to act... was and is equivalent to his actions, and it has hurt me just as much.' She also took issue with board members who used religious arguments to justify leniency, stating, 'I do not forgive you, and I do not accept your fake apologies used to protect yourselves.'
Ervin's Defense
Ervin has defended his remarks, claiming they were misinterpreted. He told NBC News, 'When I mentioned she was hot, I meant she was on a roll. It was nothing to do with her appearance.' Board Chair Annette Buchanan acknowledged Ervin's explanation but noted that his words and actions were 'shocking' and 'grossly inappropriate,' adding that 'the rest of us have to judge his words and his actions.'
The student concluded her statement by thanking the board for teaching her 'that no one will stand up for me besides myself' and for 'showing this community what you think it means to protect our children.' The Daily Mail has sought comment from Ervin and the board.
