A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Jervis Bay on the New South Wales South Coast on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a 43-year-old surfer.
Emergency Response to Distressed Swimmers
Emergency services were alerted to a water rescue situation near Cape St George Lighthouse at approximately 1:55 PM. Officers from the South Coast Police District and the Marine Area Command responded to reports of two men appearing to be in distress in the water.
Personnel from Marine Rescue NSW, the Australian Federal Police, and the Australian Navy assisted in retrieving both individuals from the water.
Casualty Details
The 43-year-old surfer was pulled from the water unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification has yet to be completed.
A second man, aged 38, was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics at Murrays Beach Boat Ramp as a precautionary measure and did not require hospitalisation.
Investigation Underway
The South Coast Police District and the Marine Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident. A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
