Teenagers Swept Out by Rough Waters Near Blackpool in Major Rescue
Teens Rescued from Rough Seas Near Blackpool

A major rescue mission was launched after a group of teenagers were swept out by rough waters while swimming near Blackpool on Friday evening (June 26). Specialist coastguard and rescue teams, along with paramedics, responded to reports of between 15 and 20 youths in the sea at Bispham on the Fylde Coast. The teenagers were found a significant distance from the sea wall and in difficulty.

Rescue Operation Details

Fleetwood Coastguard reported that several teenagers were clearly struggling, having been swept out by rough waters and strong tidal currents. Three teenagers were eventually pulled to safety and taken to hospital after ingesting seawater. A coastguard rescue officer entered the water and performed a tethered snatch rescue, bringing back two casualties before using a throw bag to rescue another. The operation was described as challenging due to choppy waves breaking against sea defences.

Previous Incidents and Warnings

Emergency services had been called the day before, on Thursday (June 25), to similar reports of teenagers in the water. This incident comes days after urgent warnings from the fire service in Greater Manchester and the death of a 15-year-old boy in Tameside. Across the UK during the June heatwave, at least seven water-related deaths have been recorded, following 19 deaths during the May heatwave, including Theresa Wheelhouse, who died after being pulled from the water at Rossall Beach on May 30 while trying to rescue her dog.

Coastguard Statement

HM Coastguard Fleetwood issued a statement warning that 'the sea doesn't always give a second chance.' The statement noted that the group had been caught out by rough sea and strong tidal currents, making conditions far more dangerous than anticipated. The coastguard also mentioned that a water safety presentation had been delivered to all year groups at Fleetwood High School only a few weeks prior, and urged the public to respect sea conditions, be aware of tides and currents, and remember the unforgiving nature of the sea.
