A toddler in Massachusetts is recovering after a vicious raccoon attack left him needing stitches and a rabies shot. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at Wayland Town Beach, where two-year-old Grayson Cohen was playing with his nanny.
The young boy was climbing the steps of a jungle gym when a raccoon suddenly leaped towards him. His father, Spencer Cohen, described the event as happening very quickly. The nanny did not realize Grayson had been bitten until she placed him in his car seat. Spencer received a text message saying his son had an encounter with a raccoon, but he did not fully understand the severity until he saw the bites and scratches.
Grayson was taken home by his nanny, and his father immediately brought him to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The toddler sustained a deep bite and scratches on his ribs, requiring three stitches and a four-dose rabies vaccination. His mother, Meghan Cohen, expressed shock at the extent of the injuries, noting that she had expected only a small scratch. She admitted that a raccoon attack was not something she had anticipated worrying about when her son went to the park.
Despite the traumatic experience, Grayson remained in good spirits. A video shared by his father showed him singing in the car after leaving the hospital. His parents reported that he is back to playing baseball and staying active, although they are trying to prevent him from jumping on the couch with his stitches. Spencer stated that they are more traumatized than their son, who is a happy and healthy two-year-old.
The Wayland Police Department is still attempting to locate the raccoon and has issued a warning to the public to exercise caution. They advise people to avoid raccoons and other wildlife and to seek medical attention if bitten or scratched. Raccoons are typically nocturnal, so daytime sightings may indicate the animal is disoriented or distressed. Meghan Cohen emphasized the need for parents to be vigilant, as raccoons can be encountered throughout the area. The Daily Mail has contacted the Wayland Police Department for further comment.
