A Delaware State Police trooper was fatally shot at a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office this week, in an incident where the gunman reportedly allowed customers to leave before opening fire on responding officers.
A Deadly Attack at the DMV Reception
According to investigators, the tragic event unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at the New Castle DMV. Corporal Matthew Snook, a ten-year veteran known to friends and colleagues as "Ty," was working an overtime assignment at the reception desk.
Authorities state that Rahman Rose, a 44-year-old man from Wilmington, entered the building as a customer. He then approached Cpl. Snook from behind and shot him with a handgun. The trooper, despite his wounds, was able to push a DMV employee out of harm's way and instruct them to run before Rose continued firing.
Gunman's Actions Before Fatal Confrontation
In a critical detail revealed by police on Friday, Rose allowed other customers inside the DMV to exit the building safely. However, the situation escalated rapidly when law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.
Rose fired multiple rounds at the approaching officers from inside the building. The confrontation ended when a New Castle County police officer, positioned outside, shot Rose through a window. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he later died.
Community Mourns a Fallen Hero
The death of Cpl. Snook has prompted an outpouring of grief and support across Delaware. On Wednesday, a solemn procession escorted his body from the state medical examiner's office to a funeral home.
Members of the public lined roadways, displaying messages of gratitude as troopers, police officers, and firefighters paid their respects. Superintendent William Crotty of the Delaware State Police said the community's support was a powerful reminder that Snook's service and sacrifice would not be forgotten.
The investigation into the shooting remains active. Authorities are urging any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to contact detectives.
