An Army veteran known for displaying patriotic and pro-Trump decorations outside his home in Escondido, California, has died after a vicious assault. Kerry Sheron, 69, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack on May 20, according to officials.
Details of the Assault
The assault occurred outside Sheron's residence, which was adorned with flags and items supporting President Donald Trump. Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was arrested on the same day and initially charged with attempted murder, cruelty to an elder, and other offenses. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutors described the attack as unprovoked. Butler allegedly delivered a single punch to Sheron's jaw, followed by additional blows to the head. Sheron's wife reported that the couple had faced harassment and threats due to their home's decorations, though no prior incidents had turned violent.
Legal Proceedings
The San Diego District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case to determine whether to file an additional murder charge against Butler. A court hearing is scheduled for June 3, where prosecutors will announce their decision.
Sheron's death has sparked outrage and calls for justice from the community. Friends and family remember him as a proud veteran who stood by his beliefs.
