Police in Greater Manchester have launched an urgent public appeal following a terrifying attempted kidnapping in Wigan. A woman was grabbed and threatened by a man as she walked along a city centre street in the early hours of the morning.
Details of the Early Morning Attack
The incident occurred on Friday 9 January 2026 between 6.05am and 6.20am. The victim was walking along Central Park Way in Wigan when she was suddenly approached and grabbed by a male suspect.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police's Criminal Investigation Department reported that the man threatened the woman and attempted to force her to go with him. In a harrowing ordeal, the terrified victim managed to break free from her attacker and run to a place of safety. The suspect then left the area.
Police Description of the Suspect
Investigators have released a detailed description of the man they wish to identify. He is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall. At the time of the attack, he was wearing:
- Grey joggers
- Black trainers
- A yellow hi-vis vest
- A black beanie hat
Detective Sergeant Andrew Partington, of GMP's Wigan CID, is leading the investigation. He stated: "Whilst we understand incidents of this nature are concerning, I want to reassure our communities that we take reports of this nature very seriously and the safety of the public is our top priority."
Ongoing Investigation and Public Reassurance
DS Partington confirmed that officers are supporting the victim and pursuing multiple lines of enquiry. "Our officers are taking every measure and following multiple lines of enquiry to investigate the circumstances of this incident," he added.
To provide reassurance and gather evidence, extra police patrols have been deployed in the area around Central Park Way. The detective urged anyone with concerns to speak to officers, who are "always more than happy to support."
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward immediately. This includes:
- Anyone who witnessed the incident on Central Park Way.
- Individuals or businesses with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between 6am and 6.30am on 9 January.
- Anyone who can help identify the man from the description provided.
