Tragic Story of Zoey Felix: 5-Year-Old's Pleas Ignored Before Rape and Murder
Zoey Felix: 5-Year-Old's Pleas Ignored Before Murder

The Heartbreaking Case of Zoey Felix

In many respects, five-year-old Zoey Felix was a typical little girl who adored mermaids, unicorns, and wearing T-shirts featuring her favourite characters. However, her young life was marked by profound tragedy and neglect that ultimately led to her brutal death.

A Life of Desperation and Neglect

Zoey lived in a dilapidated Topeka, Kansas home without running water or electricity, where the air was frequently filled with the smell of animal waste. Neighbours describe the child as often appearing grubby and malnourished, with her pitiful existence punctuated by heartbreaking pleas to escape her home environment.

"It was always 'Can I stay? Can I stay?'" recalled neighbour Shaniqua Bradley. "Normally when a child is that persistent about staying somewhere, something serious is happening at home."

Another neighbour, Sharon Williams, reported the neglect to authorities, stating: "She was always dirty, had no food unless some of us fed her, but they didn't obviously take it seriously."

Systemic Failures and Missed Opportunities

Police confirmed three separate visits to the Felix property to assess Zoey's wellbeing following reports about the residence lacking basic utilities. Officers were also summoned for a domestic disturbance at the address. The Kansas Department for Children and Families received multiple calls concerning Zoey's family situation.

Neighbours have revealed that the toddler was frequently spotted wandering the streets unsupervised, pleading for assistance. "Everybody on the block took care of Zoey," neighbour Sheryl disclosed. "Everybody loved Zoey, except her parents."

Family Breakdown and Homelessness

The situation deteriorated further when Zoey's mother, Holly Jo Felix, 36, forced her husband Ezekiel and their two daughters out of their makeshift home. Ezekiel, who had legal custody of Zoey, took both his daughters to live in a homeless encampment.

They were joined by 25-year-old Mickel Cherry, who had previously lived at the Felix residence and whom Zoey referred to as 'Uncle'. This arrangement would prove fatal for the vulnerable child.

The Final Horrific Hours

One fateful day, Ezekiel left Cherry to look after Zoey while he went to work. This would be the last time he saw his daughter alive. Around 5:45 PM that evening, Zoey's older sister Katie returned to the camp to find her half-dressed and unconscious inside a tent.

Ezekiel and a passerby attempted emergency resuscitation, but despite being rushed to hospital, Zoey died approximately one hour later. Medical examination revealed devastating injuries to her lower body, including damage to her bladder, consistent with a violent sexual assault.

Confession and Sentencing

Cherry was discovered shirtless with dried blood near his navel and subsequently confessed to raping Zoey and suffocating her with a pillow. "I did the unforgivable, something I thought I would never do," he admitted during the investigation.

Avoiding the death penalty, Cherry received consecutive sentences of 25 years for murder and 25 years for rape, totalling 50 years with the possibility of parole after serving the full term.

A Community's Grief and Unanswered Questions

Neighbours remember Zoey as "a good spirit, very outgoing, smart, and curious about everything." One recalled: "She'd ask you a thousand and one questions, and she demanded answers for those too."

Now, those questions are tragically silenced, leaving a community devastated and searching for answers about how multiple systems failed to protect this vulnerable child from the horrific fate that awaited her.
