Major Fire Engulfs Derelict Croydon Sports Centre
A significant fire incident unfolded in South London as 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines were deployed to tackle a blaze at a derelict sports centre on Imperial Way in Croydon. The London Fire Brigade received the initial alert just before 4:30 PM on Monday, March 2, following five separate emergency calls to their switchboard.

Fire crews were dispatched from multiple stations including Croydon, Purley, Wallington, Norbury, and Mitcham. Upon arrival, they discovered that most of the two-storey building was already alight. The fire service employed advanced tactics to combat the flames, deploying two 32-metre turntable ladders that functioned as water towers to attack the fire from above.
Drone technology played a crucial role in the operation, providing both live and thermal imagery from aerial perspectives. This footage allowed incident commanders to develop effective strategies and monitor the blaze in real-time, contributing significantly to bringing the fire under control by approximately 10:00 PM.
Ongoing Operations and Safety Measures
Station Commander Tony Perks emphasized that while the fire was contained, operations would continue throughout the night. "Crews are expected to be at the scene damping down remaining hot spots," he stated from the location. He also issued important safety advice to local residents and businesses, urging them to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries associated with the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities, who will work to determine the origin and circumstances surrounding the blaze at the vacant sports facility.
