A serious fire has erupted at the prestigious Grandes Alpes Private Hotel, a five-star establishment located in the upmarket ski resort of Courchevel within the French Alps. The blaze, which began shortly before 7pm on Tuesday evening, has prompted a large-scale emergency response, with more than 60 firefighters and 42 vehicles deployed to tackle the incident.
Evacuation and Safety Measures
Authorities have confirmed that 83 individuals, including guests and hotel staff, were successfully evacuated from the property and have been rehoused in alternative accommodation. Importantly, there are currently no reports of any casualties resulting from the fire, a fact that has been emphasised by both fire service officials and hotel management.
Firefighting Efforts Hampered by Severe Conditions
Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Viaud of the Savoie Fire and Rescue Service provided a detailed update on the challenging situation. He indicated that the fire is spreading across the building's complexly shaped roof, posing a significant risk of it extending to neighbouring structures.
Firefighters are encountering considerable difficulties in bringing the blaze under control due to adverse weather conditions. A thick layer of snow has blanketed the roof, complicating efforts to locate critical "smoke vents" that are essential for ventilation and fire suppression. This obstruction has slowed progress more than two hours after the fire initially broke out.
Cause of the Blaze Remains Under Investigation
The precise cause of the fire at the Grandes Alpes Private Hotel is currently unclear and remains the subject of an ongoing investigation. Hotel management has cooperated fully with emergency services, confirming that all individuals have been accounted for following the evacuation.
Context of Recent Alpine Fire Incidents
This incident follows a separate and tragic fire that occurred at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Valais, in the early hours of New Year's Day. That event resulted in 40 fatalities, predominantly teenagers, with a further 116 people injured.
In connection with that earlier blaze, bar owners Jacques Moretti, aged 49, and his wife Jessica, aged 40, are suspected of negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm, and causing a fire by negligence. Mr Moretti was arrested on January 9 over concerns he might flee but was subsequently released on bail under strict conditions, including a requirement to remain in Switzerland, surrender identity documents, and report daily to police, alongside a bail payment of 200,000 Swiss francs.
