Shouts of 'I've Done It' Follow Violent Incident
Witnesses described a man yelling "I've done it, I've done it" immediately after the 52-year-old inmate was hit approximately six times during the altercation. Durham Constabulary confirmed that a prisoner, widely understood to be Huntley, was assaulted and subsequently transported to hospital for emergency treatment of significant head injuries. Police forensic teams have been meticulously examining the scene throughout the day to gather crucial evidence related to the attack.
Suspect Identified as Investigation Continues
Authorities have identified a male prisoner in his mid-40s as the primary suspect in this serious assault. The former school caretaker is serving a life sentence with a minimum tariff of 40 years for the brutal murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002. In 2010, another inmate, Damien Fowkes, slashed Huntley's neck with a homemade weapon, inflicting a severe 7-inch wound that required 21 stitches. Fowkes later expressed hope that Huntley had died, describing him as a "notorious child killer" both inside prison and in wider society.

The attack on Huntley occurs against a backdrop of concerning violence within Britain's maximum security prison system. Recently, Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi has been accused of carrying out terrorist-style attacks on prison officers at HMP Frankland using hot cooking oil and makeshift weapons. Additionally, former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins died following an alleged attack at HMP Wakefield last October, while Killamarsh killer Damien Bendall recently received another life sentence for attempting to murder another Frankland inmate with a claw hammer in a prison workshop.
