Outrage as Wigan church vandalised and graves desecrated

Anger has erupted in the Wigan community after a local church was repeatedly targeted by vandals, resulting in the desecration of six graves and damage to irreplaceable windows. St John's Church in Abram has suffered three separate incidents of criminal damage, prompting an urgent investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Historic windows damaged and graves desecrated

According to police, the historic windows of the church were damaged on two occasions. Additionally, at least six graves within the churchyard were desecrated. The latest offence occurred between 1am and 3am on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, leading GMP to issue an urgent appeal overnight.

Police appeal for information

A GMP Wigan spokesperson expressed deep concern, stating: 'This behaviour is completely unacceptable and deeply upsetting to our local community. We do have CCTV footage of the suspected offenders, and officers will be following up all lines of enquiry.'

The spokesperson added: 'We would ask anyone with information to please come forward. Parents - do you know where your children are at those times in the early hours? The community has been left shocked and saddened by the repeated attacks on the church, which serves as a historical and spiritual landmark in Abram. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
