A US diplomat has been found dead in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, and police are treating the case as a possible homicide. A Thai woman is reportedly in custody in connection with the investigation.
Discovery at Sakura Residence + Hotel
According to three individuals from the diplomatic community in Myanmar, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization, the man was discovered deceased about two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence + Hotel. This facility, which offers long-term rentals, is frequented by diplomats, businesspeople, and other international visitors. It is located approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the US embassy.
Police Investigation
Police are treating the case as a possible homicide and have a Thai woman in custody. Authorities in Myanmar typically provide minimal information to the media. The duty officer at the police station responsible for the area where the Sakura hotel is located refused to comment and hung up on an Associated Press reporter. The manager of the Sakura hotel also declined to comment.
Official Responses
US officials in Thailand and the US embassy in Myanmar referred questions to the State Department. The State Department confirmed the death of a US government employee assigned to the embassy in Yangon but provided no further details. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the State Department said in an email reply to questions from the AP.
The Thai embassy in Yangon and Thailand’s foreign ministry also refused to comment on whether they had provided consular support to the suspect or to give any other information.
Context: Myanmar’s Political Situation
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is currently embroiled in conflict between the military-led government, which ousted democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, and various militias organized by ethnic minority groups and pro-democracy forces.
