A German-born artist has been formally charged with stalking and blackmailing the comedian and Little Britain star, Matt Lucas, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed.
Charges Authorised After Police Investigation
Alijoscha Quooss, aged 36 and residing on Cornwall Avenue in London E2, was charged following a Metropolitan Police investigation. The probe was launched after Matt Lucas, 51, reported allegations to the police on 26 June. Quooss was arrested the very next day, 27 June, on suspicion of blackmail, harassment, and malicious communications.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: 'Charges have been authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) against Alijoscha Quooss, 36 (05.01.90), of Cornwall Avenue, E2 for stalking and blackmail.'
Suspect Flees After Failing to Answer Bail
In a significant development, Quooss failed to answer bail to be formally charged. Authorities now believe he has left the United Kingdom. The police confirmed that enquiries into his whereabouts are ongoing.
This legal action comes just three weeks after Matt Lucas was unsuccessful in obtaining a gagging order against Quooss. Lucas, represented by a KC, sought an interim injunction at an emergency High Court hearing, but the judge dismissed the application. Quooss represented himself during those proceedings.
Bail Conditions and Ongoing Case
As part of his initial bail conditions following the June arrest, Quooss was prohibited from contacting Mr Lucas or going near his address. Despite these restrictions and the serious stalking and blackmail charges now brought by the CPS, the accused is now at large outside the UK.
The case highlights the challenges in prosecuting alleged offences when a suspect absconds. The Crown Prosecution Service has proceeded with authorising charges, underscoring the severity of the allegations against the artist.
