Justin Baldoni's Attorney Breaks Silence Following Major Legal Victory
Justin Baldoni's lead attorney Bryan Freedman has broken his silence following a significant legal victory in the ongoing lawsuit filed by actress Blake Lively. The development represents a major shift in the contentious legal battle that has captivated Hollywood for over a year.
Judge Dismisses Majority of Sexual Harassment Claims
On Thursday, Judge Lewis Liman delivered a crucial ruling in the New York court, throwing out 10 of the 13 claims that Baldoni sexually harassed Lively during the production of their 2024 film It Ends With Us. The dismissed allegations formed the bulk of Lively's case against her co-star and director.
The actress had originally raised three primary concerns regarding Baldoni's behavior during filming: that he kissed her during a scene without scripted direction, that he entered a room while she was breastfeeding, and that he showed her a video of his wife giving birth. These incidents formed the foundation of her sexual harassment allegations.
Attorney Celebrates Court's Decision
Speaking exclusively to TMZ on Friday, Freedman expressed satisfaction with the judge's ruling. "Since the first day of this case, when Justin and the other defendants were blindsided by these allegations, the legal team on the ground from the beginning have worked extremely long days and nights defending this case through transparency," Freedman stated.
The attorney emphasized their strategy of presenting evidence to counter the claims. "The defendants were not afraid of the truth. The plan was not only to speak the truth but to also show that same truth over and over again through the presentation of actual evidence. Neither Justin Baldoni, Jamey Heath nor any of the other defendants have engaged in the sexual harassment of Blake Lively."
Remaining Claims and Trial Schedule
Despite the significant reduction in claims, the legal battle continues. Lively retains three remaining allegations: breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting retaliation. The trial remains scheduled to proceed on May 18 in New York City, though the scope has been dramatically narrowed.
Baldoni's supporting attorneys, Alexandra Shapiro and Jonathan Bach, also commented on the development. "We're very pleased the Court dismissed all sexual harassment claims and every claim brought against the individual defendants," they told The Daily Mail. "These were very serious allegations, and we are grateful to the Court for its careful review of the facts, law and voluminous evidence that was provided."
Lively's Legal Team Responds
Sigrid McCawley, representing Blake Lively, maintained focus on the remaining aspects of the case. "This case has always been and will remain focused on the devastating retaliation and the extraordinary steps the defendants took to destroy Blake Lively's reputation because she stood up for safety on the set," McCawley stated.
She added, "For Blake Lively, the greatest measure of justice is that the people and the playbook behind these coordinated digital attacks have been exposed and are already being held accountable by other women they've targeted. She looks forward to testifying at trial and continuing to shine a light on this vicious form of online retaliation."
Background of the Legal Dispute
The lawsuit originated in December 2024 when Lively filed claims accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment, retaliatory conduct, and intentional infliction of emotional stress. The actress alleged multiple forms of harassment, including body shaming, and claimed Baldoni orchestrated a smear campaign against her.
The legal action named several of Baldoni's collaborators, including his company Wayfarer Studios, the studio's CEO and financial backer, and public relations personnel. Baldoni had previously sought substantial damages in separate legal actions related to media coverage of the allegations.
It Ends With Us, based on Colleen Hoover's 2016 novel, achieved significant box office success with $148 million domestically and $350 million globally. However, the film's commercial achievements have been overshadowed by the legal conflict between its two lead actors. The storyline itself centered on a toxic relationship between characters played by Lively and Baldoni, adding an ironic layer to their real-life legal drama.
