Daughter's 15-Year Search Ends in Garden Grave Discovery of Murdered Mother
Katarzyna Zablocka has described the "soul crushing uncertainty" of not knowing what happened to her mother, who was murdered and buried in a garden for 15 years. She spent her "entire adult life" trying to uncover the truth after her mother Izabela vanished in 2010 when Katarzyna was young.
Unwavering Belief in a Mother's Love
Katarzyna, now 25 and studying economics, said she always believed her mother loved her and would never have abandoned her. This conviction gave her the strength to persist in her inquiries, which ultimately led to the grim discovery of her mother's remains in the garden of a house in Derby in June last year.
In a victim impact statement read to Derby Crown Court, she explained: "As a young child I was incredibly close to my mother, she was my whole world so the fact that she suddenly vanished from my life without a single word of explanation was a horrific experience for me."
The Trauma of Sudden Disappearance
She detailed how the impact of her mother's sudden disappearance and the trauma of sudden separation would live with her forever. Instead of playing with peers and enjoying childhood, she was "constantly wondering where my mum was and why she had stopped calling me."
This led to feelings of abandonment, causing her to withdraw and suffer from panic attacks. However, she maintained: "Even though I lived in limbo for years, in my heart I always felt my mother didn't leave me on purpose."
Discovery and Investigation Details
Izabela Zablocka was murdered by her partner Anna Podedworna, 40, who dismembered her body and buried it under hardstanding in a "filthy, makeshift grave" using bin bags. Podedworna, a skilled butcher, lived with her secret for 15 years, lying to both the victim's family and police.
Derbyshire police had closed their investigation after just 10 days, and Polish authorities had also long ceased their inquiries. The couple had moved to the UK from Poland in 2009 and had argued about Izabela's reluctance to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
Daughter's Determination Uncovers Truth
Police stated that Podedworna might have gotten away with murder if not for Katarzyna's determination and bravery. She refused to accept that her mother had abandoned her when phone calls stopped abruptly in 2010.
In a statement to police, Katarzyna said: "For the past 15 years, my family and I have been left wondering what had happened to my mum. I always felt that something was wrong – it was not like my mum at all."
She recalled her birthday shortly after the disappearance, knowing her mother would never miss such an occasion. "I felt subconsciously that she must have had some sort of accident, or something bad must have happened," she added.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Podedworna eventually admitted killing Izabela by hitting her with a horse figurine but denied murder. She was found guilty following a trial and was scheduled for sentencing.
Katarzyna expressed mixed emotions about the outcome: "It is heartbreaking, but I do also feel a great sense of satisfaction because I never gave up, and if it wasn't for that determination to find out the truth, we wouldn't be in the place we are now. I never gave up."
The case highlights the profound impact of unresolved disappearances on families and the critical role of persistent loved ones in solving cold cases.
