Children Unearth Human Skull During Easter Egg Hunt at California Park
A family's festive Easter egg hunt at a southern California park took a horrifying turn on Sunday when children discovered a small human skull and other bones buried near a walking path. The incident occurred at DeForest Park in Long Beach, casting a shadow over the holiday celebration and prompting an immediate police response.
Shocking Discovery Amid Holiday Festivities
According to reports from CBS LA, members of the family were searching for Easter eggs inside the park when they stumbled upon what appeared to be the skeletal remains of a small child. The skull was found partially buried just feet from the entrance to the park's walking path, disrupting what was meant to be a joyful tradition. "It's just so sad what happened, and then on Easter Sunday. And then for kids to find it, that's very disturbing," said George G., a Long Beach resident, in an interview with KTLA.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Following the discovery, Long Beach police and officials from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office were dispatched to the scene. The area was quickly cordoned off, and a white canopy was erected over the location where the skull was found. In a statement, the Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that they "recovered a skeletonized human skull and mandible and brought the recovered remains to the Forensic Science Center for further examination." The remains have since been sent to the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center in Los Angeles for detailed analysis.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Probe
Local residents expressed shock and sadness over the finding, noting that the park had been bustling with activity just the day before. "The whole place was full of people barbecuing, having a really good time," George added. Marc Zaldana, another resident, told CBS LA that he witnessed the children's distress moments after the discovery. "At first we saw the family there, doing like an Easter egg hunt, but they were freaking out a little bit," Zaldana said. "I can only imagine, like for them, finding a dead, another kid... Must be tragic for them." Authorities have stated that their investigation remains ongoing, with no further details released at this time.
