NFL Stars Kelce and Mahomes Face Trademark Lawsuit Over Steakhouse Name
Kelce and Mahomes Sued Over Steakhouse Trademark

Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are facing a significant legal challenge over the name of their recently opened steakhouse restaurant. The NFL players, along with their business partner Noble 33, have been sued by Boston-based footwear company 1587 Sneakers for alleged trademark infringement.

The Core of the Legal Dispute

The central issue revolves around the numerical designation "1587," which holds significance for both parties. Kelce and Mahomes named their Kansas City establishment 1587 Prime as a tribute to their combined jersey numbers—Mahomes wears number 15, while Kelce sports 87. The restaurant opened its doors in September 2025 inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel, featuring a luxurious 10,000-square-foot space across two floors with multiple private dining rooms.

Sneaker Company's Claims

1587 Sneakers, founded by Adam King, asserts that the similar name has caused "significant harm to our business" and created confusion among customers. The company claims that "scores of customers" have mistakenly associated their footwear brand with the Missouri steakhouse. In their lawsuit, they are demanding that the restaurant cease using the 1587 moniker and stop selling merchandise featuring the numbers.

"While we are fans of Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes and respect their accomplishments on the field and in the community, it's important to acknowledge that—for years now—1587 has stood on its own, shaped by intentional effort and storytelling," King stated in an official Instagram post. He emphasized their desire for "mutual respect and understanding" and expressed hope for an amicable resolution.

Timeline of Trademark Applications

The legal battle involves competing trademark applications that highlight the timing of each party's claims. Kelce and Mahomes filed for a "1587 Prime" trademark in the bar and restaurant category back in December 2023, well before their establishment's opening. Meanwhile, 1587 Sneakers applied for the "1587" trademark in the clothing category in October 2025, just one month after the steakhouse launched.

Notably, the sneaker company began selling its products in April 2023 and gained enough popularity to appear on the television show Shark Tank in 2024, though they did not secure an investment from the program's panel. Their trademark application is currently under review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Restaurant Details and Player Silence

1587 Prime offers an upscale dining experience with menu items including wagyu beef, togarashi-fried chicken, and a Japanese A5 wagyu smash burger. Despite the restaurant's high-profile launch and subsequent legal troubles, neither Kelce (age 36) nor Mahomes (age 30) has publicly commented on the trademark infringement lawsuit.

The sneaker company is seeking unspecified damages in addition to their demand for the restaurant to stop using the contested name. This case will ultimately determine whether two brands operating in different industries—footwear and fine dining—can coexist under similar numerical names without causing marketplace confusion.
