New revelations have emerged showing that the parents of convicted child murderer Lucy Letby approached police authorities months before an official investigation into a spike in infant deaths was formally launched. John Letby, the killer's 80-year-old father, visited Blacon police station in Chester during March 2017 to voice concerns that hospital consultants were unfairly targeting his daughter.
Parental Intervention Preceded Official Probe
The police station stood just half a mile from Lucy Letby's Chester residence at the time. This parental intervention occurred a full two months before Cheshire Constabulary initiated their formal inquiry into the troubling pattern of neonatal fatalities at the Countess of Chester Hospital. It is understood that Lucy Letby, an only child, did not accompany her father during this significant visit to the authorities.
Hospital Tensions and Professional Concerns
During this period, paediatric consultants were engaged in tense negotiations with hospital executives who were pushing for Letby's reinstatement to the neonatal unit. The nurse had been removed from frontline duties nine months earlier, following suspicions surrounding the deaths of two triplet brothers during consecutive shifts in July 2016.
Despite Letby having filed an employment grievance regarding her redeployment to administrative duties, and being formally cleared of any wrongdoing six months later, medical professionals remained deeply concerned. Their apprehension about her scheduled return to clinical work on April 3, 2017, prompted them to take extraordinary measures.
Escalation to Official Authorities
The concerned consultants wrote directly to the area coroner and insisted that hospital management consult with the local child death safeguarding panel, which included police representation. This crucial meeting ultimately triggered the launch of the official police investigation into the infant mortality spike one month later, in May 2017. From that point forward, Lucy Letby never resumed her nursing career.
Arrest Timeline and Parental Response
Letby's initial arrest occurred in July 2018, followed by subsequent arrests at her parents' Hereford home in June 2019 and November 2020, when she was formally charged with murder and remanded into custody. The convicted killer, now 36, received a record 15 whole life orders following two separate trials in 2023 and 2024.
John and Susan Letby, who maintain their daughter's innocence, recently issued a strongly worded statement to the Sunday Times newspaper. They criticised an upcoming Netflix documentary scheduled for broadcast, which features previously unseen footage of their daughter's arrests. The couple described the documentary as a "complete invasion of privacy" and expressed their refusal to watch the 90-minute film, stating that doing so "would likely kill us."
Parental Allegations and Hospital Dynamics
The Thirlwall Inquiry, led by Lady Justice Thirlwall with findings due for publication later this year, heard evidence that the Letbys demanded hospital executives "instantly dismiss" consultants Stephen Brearey and Ravi Jayaram. The parents believed these doctors held a "personal grudge" against their then-26-year-old daughter.
Testimony revealed that John Letby made repeated telephone calls to the hospital and secured highly unusual face-to-face meetings with senior management. During these encounters, he insisted on disciplinary action being taken against the medical professionals who had raised concerns about his daughter.
Management Testimony and Ongoing Developments
Former Countess of Chester Hospital chief executive Tony Chambers told the inquiry that Letby's father was "very angry" and "making threats" during this period. Chambers described threats that included referrals to the General Medical Council and what he characterised as "guns to my head and all sorts of things." He further testified that he felt John Letby was "pulling the strings" and maintained a "sense of his presence" even during meetings held with Lucy Letby alone.
Susan Letby was described by one senior manager as "quite timid" but became "emotional" and "very, very upset" during telephone conversations and hospital meetings attended by the couple.
Legal Proceedings and Continuing Investigations
Lucy Letby has twice attempted and failed to appeal her convictions but continues to pursue legal avenues. A file containing new "expert" evidence has been lodged with the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the body responsible for investigating potential miscarriages of justice, with hopes of securing a third referral to the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, a separate police investigation into potential corporate manslaughter at the Countess of Chester Hospital remains ongoing. In June, three former hospital executives were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter before being released on bail pending further inquiries.
The Netflix documentary "The Investigation of Lucy Letby" is scheduled for global release, featuring never-before-seen bodycam footage showing the nurse being arrested while still in bed wearing pyjamas. In the footage, a visibly distressed Letby is heard saying "Don't look, just go in" as she is led away by officers.
