MOT Tester Banned After Drunk Scooter Crash

David Matthewson, a 56-year-old MOT tester from Ashington, has been disqualified from driving for 18 months after falling off a moped while over the alcohol limit in Bedlington. The incident occurred on April 18 when Matthewson lost control of his scooter on Horton Road, causing him to fall and hit another vehicle.

Court Proceedings and Guilty Plea

At South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court, Matthewson pleaded guilty to driving while over the alcohol limit. Prosecutor Jade Houston stated that when police arrived, Matthewson admitted he would "probably fail" a breathalyser. A roadside test confirmed this, and he was arrested. A subsequent test showed 65mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, nearly double the legal limit of 35mcg.

Matthewson, of Burnside, Ashington, had only one previous conviction from 1998. His defence lawyer, Graham Crouth, explained that Matthewson intended to turn right at a junction but applied the brakes, causing the front wheel to lock and the scooter to skid. Crouth added, "He didn't believe, when he began that journey, that he was over-the-limit."

Impact and Sentence

The court heard that Matthewson has since addressed his alcohol issues but is likely to lose his job as an MOT tester due to the conviction. In addition to the driving ban, he was fined £400 and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £160 victim surcharge.

This case highlights the consequences of drink driving, even on a scooter, and the importance of road safety.
