Mother of Two Dies from Blunt Head Injury

Zoe Marie Dixon, a 35-year-old mother of two from Merthyr Tydfil, died in hospital six days after suffering a blunt head injury that included a complex skull fracture, an inquest opening heard. The hearing at Pontypridd Coroners' Court on July 2, 2026, revealed that Ms Dixon was admitted to the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff on June 16 after emergency services responded to concerns for her welfare at her home on Rocky Road in Penydarren.

Postmortem Reveals Cause of Death

A postmortem examination conducted by Dr Stephen Leadbetter at UHW on June 26 gave a provisional cause of death as: 1A blunt head injury including complex parieto-occipital skull fracture and left parieto-occipital cerebral contusions. The coroner, Rachel Knight, stated that there was reason to suspect the death was traumatic and unnatural, necessitating a full inquest, the date of which will be confirmed later.

Partner Found Dead at Reservoir

Ms Dixon's partner, Nathan Thomas, 39, was found dead at Pontsticill Reservoir in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) in the early hours of June 16, shortly after the assault. South Wales Police has confirmed that the investigation into the serious assault is now being treated as a homicide. The force stated: "The investigation into the serious assault of a 35-year-old woman in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, continues and is now being treated as a homicide by South Wales Police."

Police Investigation Ongoing

According to the police statement, emergency services were called to the Rocky Road address shortly before midnight on June 15, and Ms Dixon was taken to UHW for treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, she died on June 22. Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. The coroner ended the hearing by sending condolences to Ms Dixon's family.
