CPS Rules Out New Charges Against Lucy Letby After Evidence Review
No New Charges for Lucy Letby, CPS Confirms

The Crown Prosecution Service has made a definitive announcement regarding the case of Lucy Letby, stating that the former nurse will not face any new criminal charges. This decision follows a comprehensive review of evidence submitted by Cheshire Constabulary in July 2025, which detailed further allegations against Letby.

Background of the Case

Lucy Letby, aged 36, is currently serving 15 whole-life prison terms after being convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others. These crimes occurred at the Countess of Chester hospital and Liverpool Women's hospital, with the offences taking place up to June 2016.

Details of the CPS Review

The CPS had been evaluating 11 potential charges against Letby, involving nine babies across the two hospital sites. These included allegations of murder and attempted murder related to both fatal and non-fatal incidents. Specifically, the review covered eight offences of attempted murder and one murder charge at the Countess of Chester hospital, along with one attempted murder and one murder charge at Liverpool Women's hospital.

Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS's special crime division, explained the decision-making process. He stated that after a thorough examination of the evidence, the CPS concluded that the evidential test required for prosecution was not met in any of the cases under consideration. Ferguson emphasised that this decision was made independently, based solely on the evidence and in accordance with legal standards.

Communication with Affected Families

The CPS has taken steps to inform the families involved in these allegations. They have written to them and will offer meetings to provide a detailed explanation of the decision. Ferguson expressed that the CPS's thoughts remain with the families during this time, acknowledging the sensitivity and impact of the case.

It is important to note that this decision is subject to the victim's right to review scheme, which allows for further scrutiny if requested. However, as of now, the CPS has determined that no additional charges will be pursued against Letby, bringing this phase of the legal proceedings to a close.
